Pebbles Tumor
9/2006

Pebbles was at a man's house who let her tumor grow stating that it just kept coming back so it "was pointless to have it removed." Luckily she was saved by Debbie of the Inland Empire who got her to Diane Newburg who helped get her to Dr. Oliver in Malibu. Pebbles is over two years old. The tumor is actually heavier than her. Her two cagemates liked it because it was like a pillow for them, but of course, it wasn't comfortable for Pebbles at all. She could barely get around (one of her cagemates would even bring her food). We weren't even sure if she would be able to have the tumor removed, it wasn't just attached to her side, but her whole left front leg.

The tumor was huge making mobility almost impossible for her. And being older
we weren't sure if she'd even pull through a surgery or if it was even possible.

Pebbles went in for surgery and everything went well. She came out fine with a slew of stitches. At first, still drugged and probably in a little pain, she was bewildered at what had happened. It was hard to walk with the way the stitches went all along her side from one front leg to the back leg. She was also kept by herself for a few days as there were so many stitches we were a little afraid of her buddies getting poked. But finally her cagemates were reunited with her and everything was fine.

She's still a little drugged after getting home.

The stitches go all along her side.

From above she looks like a normal rat again.

She had to get used to not having to carry around
all that weight.

Finally after two weeks her stitches came out and everything was fine. She was learning to walk normal again and being able to move freely without having to lug around a tumor that weighed more than she did. Sure, her buddies probably missed having that big pillow around but I'm sure she doesn't. The fur there probably won't grow back but now that she can get all the food she wants on her own, she'll probably start putting weight back on and hopefully, despite her age, enjoy a long time of being a normal rat again.

She has to learn to walk normal again.

No more stitches.

A normal rat again.
