Swirl, Samantha & the Babies
June 16, 2000

Samantha & Swirl enjoy some corn.

The hooded young girl went to a new home to a rat lover in Westminster, CA.. I delivered her last night (which was luckily on my way to the Irvine Improv which is where I was working).  She named the new girl Deina.  She had a huge cage with a  few rats in it already.  Deina was a little scared at first, but later settled in fine.  She was going to be in her own small cage for a couple days just so the other rats could get used to her scent.  But the end result will be a happy rat living in a huge cage with some other rats.  If she only knew how lucky she was. She went from living with a scumbag breeder to a great residence in a huge cage where she will be pampered.  I love it when the stories end like that.

Two-Spot, Three-Spot & Four-Spot.

The other saves are doing fine.  I cannot believe how far Samantha has come.  She doesn’t mind it when I pick her up at all now. She comes to my lap when I sit down with them. She loves to be pet.  Swirl doesn’t like to be held at all and I think that’s something she will never like, which is okay, because she’s a nice girl otherwise and a good mom.  Her three babies, whom I’ve named two-dot, three-dot and four-dot (for seperating purposes, the final owner can of course name them whatever they like), just love being out of the cage. They run, hop, skip, jump all over.  They run and jump on Samantha or their mom. They jump on each other or the other two albino girls. They have started "dropping" and I've made an interesting discovery: one of them is a girl. Four-Spot, ain't gonna drop.  Swirl has done a great job with them. I only wish I was able to save her other babies.

I've also made another interesting discovery this week. Samantha is pregnant. I wasn't sure if she was just getting fat because for the first time in her life she's eating real well, but there's no doubt now. She's close to popping. I hope I can get pledges for her babies by the time they're ready to go. I'm maxed out on rat-room here.

The two albino girls are doing well also, although I suspect they’re looking for their former roommate (Deina).  They get along with Swirl’s boys real well. They’re very friendly and if I had room, I would keep them.  Anyone who takes them can be assured these are two very good pets.

A dish of Three-Spot.
